0:55

I do not see anyone online nor in person.

0:58

But let's just go.

1:05

Yeah.

1:06

I'm going to open it just so we okay.

1:10

So we are the only participants.

1:13

There is another non-agenda public comment section at the end.

1:17

If someone picks this up later, we can move on to the consent calendar.

1:21

We have 3A, which is the draft minutes of this, the special and regular library board meetings of July 8th.

2:03

We can move on to agenda item number four, which is receiving our report from our brand new library director.

2:12

We're so excited to have you here.

2:14

Thank you for your coming.

2:15

Thank you.

2:16

Let's get to know you more.

2:18

Yeah, absolutely.

2:19

Well, I appreciate the warm welcome I've received here in Alameda, and so pleased to be here in the library director position.

2:30

And would be remiss not to give a uh heartfelt and deep gratitude to Barlow Romero for his work in the interim director position, uh, which is uh not his first time in the seat.

2:43

Uh he's been incredibly generous with his knowledge and his time uh with me, and I am just very grateful.

2:52

Um he's definitely made the transition a lot easier, more stability for staff, and uh started me on really excellent strong footing, good foundation.

3:02

Um so just very grateful for Marlon's assistance.

3:06

Um I've now met with all of you, um, so I really appreciate you taking time out of your very busy schedules.

3:13

Um they always say if you if you want something done, ask a busy person.

3:16

So I know we've got busy people in this room, and uh really appreciate your time um getting to know me and telling me a little bit about yourselves and your excitement and passion for public libraries.

3:29

So um just so grateful for your service uh to the city of Alameda and really uh very pleased to um be to be here with you.

3:40

Um so I um probably won't do too much of a background since I've met with each of you and shared, I think uh in a lot more detail about my background.

3:53

Um but I will just share that I am you know rapidly getting up to speed at the library, uh familiarizing myself with our policies, budget, and our strategic plan and really hitting the ground running on projects that are mid-stream.

4:12

Um, one of the main things there is uh working on implementing strategic plan committees, which were uh conceived prior to my arrival, um, and then uh we've done a little bit of tweaking on them in the content, while it in particular through the lens of measuring and implementation.

4:37

Um so we are in the final stages of forming those committees.

4:41

Um we just want to make sure that folks who um put their interest in uh are aware of some of the changes and updates so that it's still something that reflects their interest and their passions to get involved.

5:00

And then once we form those committees, we do plan to launch those on October 1st, which we will be closed on that day.

5:04

It's a Thursday.

5:06

We're closing for all staff meeting and the staff appreciation picnic that the city hosts that same day, and also taking advantage of the fact that it's often hard to get groups from each of our libraries together in one place.

5:21

So we'll be doing some uh we'll be launching those strategic plan committees, setting norms, setting expectations, and then releasing those groups.

5:31

The intention is for those groups to be staff-led groups.

5:34

Um, and they'll kind of have their margin orders from our strategic plan.

5:39

These are the um strategies and objectives that we feel these groups are responsible for moving forward, um, and then an opportunity for them to take stock of the capacity to move these things forward, maybe look at some of the low-hanging fruit projects and goals and get some of those started and start to build a plan for their work through this fiscal year and beyond.

Summary of Proceedings

Alameda Library Board Meeting - September 14, 2026

Note: The raw transcript dates the meeting to September 9, 2026, but the official meeting date provided is September 14, 2026. This summary uses the latter.

The Alameda Library Board held a regular meeting on September 14, 2026, at 6:03 PM local time. President Amar Saru Ordena was present, as were board members Battle, Gibbons, and Conji. Board member Strickler was absent. The meeting featured the first formal report from the newly appointed library director and covered strategic plan implementation, new state-mandated student library card program, upcoming events, and facility improvements.

Consent Calendar

  • The consent calendar included Item 3A (draft minutes of the special and regular library board meetings of July 8, 2026), Item 3B (financial reporting for FY 2026–27 July and August expenditures), and Item 3C (bills for ratification for July and August). The board accepted these documents on a motion without discussion or opposition.

Public Comments & Testimony

  • No members of the public spoke during either the opening or closing non-agenda public comment periods. Neither in-person nor virtual attendees offered testimony.

Discussion Items

  • Library Director’s Report: The new library director expressed gratitude to interim director Marlon Romero for a smooth transition and provided updates on several initiatives:
    • Strategic Plan Committees: Final formation of staff-led committees aligned with the strategic plan is underway, with a launch planned for October 1, 2026. The board encouraged frequent data sharing and impact measurement beyond simple attendance counts.
    • Student Connect Code: A state-mandated program providing every Alameda Unified School District student with a barrier-free library card (up to five physical items plus digital access) launched earlier that week. The director also noted a free statewide tutoring service (Homework CA) now available 24/7 at no cost to the library.
    • Main Library Redesign: A redesign/envisioning project was being refined with Public Works; an ADA review triggered by the automated book-check (AMH) project may require accessibility improvements before proceeding.
    • Upcoming Events: The library will host author Lauren Tarshis on September 21, celebrate the main library’s 20th anniversary on November 7 (October 1 closure for staff appreciation), and plan a yearlong 150th anniversary celebration in 2027. Recent highlights included Pride Fest and Alameda BookCon (over 1,500 attendees).
    • Staffing: Recruitment for a full-time library assistant and a full-time librarian is underway, with strong internal and external candidate pools.
  • Board Communications: Board members discussed the importance of collecting both quantitative and qualitative data to demonstrate library impact, especially for children and families. Concerns were raised about after-hours programming at the Bay Farm branch—many neighborhood businesses close early, limiting the library’s ability to serve as a “third space.” The board also noted the need for multilingual translations of key instructions and stronger cross-library staff collaboration.

Key Outcomes

  • The consent calendar was approved unanimously (no vote tally recorded, no opposition).
  • No formal votes or resolutions were taken on other agenda items.
  • The director will report back in November on strategic plan committee progress and data baseline measurements.
  • The automated book-check (AMH) project remains pending resolution of ADA accessibility issues with Public Works; a meeting was anticipated within two weeks.
  • Board members expressed interest in further discussions about expanding evening hours and increasing neighborhood integration, especially at Bay Farm.
