Annapolis City Council Discussion on Spa Creek Bridge Maintenance - July 22, 2026
Annapolis City Council Discussion on Spa Creek Bridge Maintenance - July 22, 2026
The Annapolis City Council convened on July 22, 2026, to discuss agenda item ID 159-26 concerning maintenance issues with the Spa Creek Bridge. Alderman Shatemayer and Alderman Savage led the discussion, noting three recent bridge failures due to heat. The council intended to invite representatives from the city's Public Works department and the State Highway Administration (the primary maintenance entity) to provide updates, but no representatives attended, leading to an adjournment with plans to revisit the topic.
Discussion Items
- Alderman Shatemayer requested the meeting after three failures of the Spa Creek Bridge over the prior two weeks due to heat. He hoped to discuss what went wrong, how the bridge was restored, future maintenance plans, and eventual replacement, as the bridge is "on its last legs."
- No representatives from Public Works or State Highway were present. Alderman Shatemayer expressed frustration, calling the meeting "pointless" without them. The council noted the August recess and agreed to invite the relevant departments to the September meeting.
Key Outcomes
- The council directed Ms. Jackson to formally invite representatives from Public Works and the State Highway Administration to the next meeting in September 2026.
- If an emergency occurs before September, a special meeting could be called.
- The meeting was adjourned after a motion. No votes or actions were taken on the bridge issue itself.
Meeting Transcript
So moved. Okay, all in favor. Well, do I have a second? Second. All in favor. Thank you again for making that motion and approval. Next on the agenda is general discussion section. We have ID 159-26. Spar Creek Bridge Miss Main Maintenance. Alderman Shatemayer and Aldman Savage, would you like to start the discussion, please? Yes, madam chair. So I requested this meeting after we had three failures on the Spa Creek Bridge over the past over two weeks due to the heat. And I was hoping that we could invite folks from our public works department and from state highway, as they are the primary responsible entity from uh for the maintenance of this bridge. And I don't know if miss to talk about what went wrong, what were what we did to get the bridge back operational, what the plan is to maintain it in the future, and um what we're gonna be doing to eventually replace it because I think it's kind of on its last legs. So I don't know if we have anyone from public works or from the state highway joined us here today. Did we have anyone from the those the one of those departments? No, I don't think so. Okay, so we're this is this is a pointless meeting then. Yeah, that's the purpose of it. Okay, well, we can't go no further with that. Um we'll just do you want to wait until September or do we want to just try do this again? Um I mean it's kind of too little too late to get anybody here. Uh I think for the rest of this month. Um sorry we did all that to get a meeting. Anybody join us? Um, I was hoping to get it at the end of I was hoping to get the special meeting ready so we could actually uh talk about it while it was still very relevant while we're still dealing with heat in the middle of August. But um just in case it happens again, you know. Yeah. Um I guess uh Ms. Jackson, if you could make sure that we invite them for our September meeting. Uh still worth going over, I suppose. Yeah, I will do so. Um sorry about that. Unless anybody else has commentary on it, I think. And if we don't have those people here, this is kind of a pointless meeting. Yes. Well, uh can we get some formal imitations? It would be good to learn more from the state exactly what's going on, or maybe our public works knows, but still, if we got somebody from the state, we could figure out if they have any kind of upgrade plans for that bridge, what the lifespan is, um frequency of how shut down that kind of thing. Yes, we need and maybe they have pictures all showing us um how old and you know, different parts that may give out or whatever, you know. Something is making it not you know shut. So and that's why the main bridges that we need here in the city. So if they I don't know, maybe are people on vacation now, or you think we should try have it in before September. I mean, we're always off on August, and I live like a nomad. I am so upset. I'm sorry, I'll tell you. They couldn't make it. So I mean it could have called. Okay, um, well, we'll invite them to our next meeting. And hopefully the bridge will remain like it should with no problems until we meet again. Or never have them all problems right now.
