Streetscape History and Art Advisory Committee Regular Meeting - October 28, 2022

The Streetscape History and Art Advisory Committee (SHAAC) held a regular meeting on the date above, with attendees including Randall Fee, Carol Cramer, Chris Packard, Cynthia Haynes, Bridget Powers, Kim Haswell, April McDonald-Loomis, and Manouch Shirvanioun representing Leadership Auburn. The meeting covered tile approvals, historical tile revisions, logo design, tile placement planning, and administrative matters.

Public Comments & Testimony

• Kim reported from the Historic Design Review Committee (HDRC) about two upcoming Envision Auburn meetings: a workshop on December 1, 2025 at 5:30 PM at City Hall and a general meeting on December 3, 2025 at 6:00 PM at Placer High Cafeteria. Kim noted that the General Plan wording may have omitted the word "History." Carol emphasized that history is a major pillar of the town.

Consent Calendar

• The minutes from October 23, 2025 were approved with several minor wording corrections.
• The Treasurer's Report was approved, showing a Fund 56 balance of $12,423.26 as of October 17, 2025, with a FY 2025-2026 budget of $5,000.

Discussion Items

• Tile Review and Approval: The Committee discussed and approved wording for a Leadership Auburn tile, deciding to use the term "graduates." This tile will likely go to City Council in January 2026. Bridget will notify Manouch; payment will be submitted upon Council approval.
• David Albright Tile: Already approved by the Committee and City Council. The logo should be changed to a line drawing. Bridget will contact the family. The proposed location in front of the Police Department is unlikely to be used for tiles soon; the family is fine with placement in Central Square or City Hall if that area opens.
• New Tiles: None submitted.
• Historical Tiles:
  • Charlie Yue: Approved after correcting "1900's" to "1900s" (lowercase s).
  • Kee Chin: Suggested removing the word "Mandarin" leaving only "Boss." Bridget will verify Chinese characters with Mike Holmes.
  • Harriet Crandall: Wording approved; Chris will ask Cynci to remove bushes from in front of the church in the logo.
• SHAAC Logo: Two proposals were reviewed: one by Amy and a mock-up by Stewart Feldman (cost $300). Discussion ensued on spending money; a contest was considered. Chris will ask Cynci if she is interested. The Committee expressed appreciation for Cynci's contributions and plans to acknowledge her at a future unveiling.
• Tile Placement: Randall presented a sketch showing splice boxes in front of the Visitor's Center, making that location suboptimal. The Committee ranked preferred areas:
  1. In front of City Hall
  2. From State Theater to the small park
  3. In front of the Visitor's Center It was noted that the City Manager should be informed to consider SHAAC tiles whenever sidewalk repairs are planned. Chris and Randall will meet with the City Manager soon.
• Tile Engraving Frequency: The Committee decided to keep engraving twice a year rather than once, as a yearly cycle could extend wait times to two years depending on start times.
• Kiosk Signage: The blank kiosk could be used to explain SHAAC. A graphic artist is needed. Cynthia will contact Uptown Signs; Bridget will contact Auburn Trophy, possibly seeking donated work.
• Unveiling Ceremony: Planned for June 2026, tentatively scheduled for the Tuesday before the Western States Run to take advantage of visitors.
