The council will recall that on June 1st, a 180-day moratorium was adopted that applies to new enlarged or expanded data centers with an electrical capacity of one megawatt or greater.

Working with staff, our Bowdoin intern Tyler McGrath researched how other communities are approaching this issue and prepared the initial draft included in the council packet.

Uh so data centers are facilities that house computer servers and other related equipment for the processing, storing, managing, and distributing of digital information and data.

Um their potential impacts vary considerably depending on the scale, such as the scale or the power, the amount of power they use and the cooling technology.

Um larger scale facilities may consume massive amounts of electricity and water, sometimes comparable to tens of thousands of single-family homes, as seen in the table.

Um and regulations can help address these impacts through energy and water efficiency requirements, renewable energy measures, um, and other performance standards.

There are no universally accepted um definitions of small, medium, and large data centers.

Um this table gives a general some general examples of sizes, um, starting with micro scale data centers with around 100 to 150 kilowatt energy draws all the way to over 100 megawatts with hyper hyperscale data centers.

Uh an important point to note is that not all data centers are for artificial intelligence or AI.

Um, some store data, such as cloud storage, thinking like you know, cloud or the cloud.

Um host websites and apps, some are used for networking and the distribution of data, um, and then along with a variety of other tasks such as the processing of data for AI.

Um despite these different uses, the main factor contributing to their impact is the scale.

Um and so our key policy question is which, if any of these scales may be appropriate for Brunswick.
