Clovis Senior Services Committee Regular Meeting - July 10, 2025
The Senior Services Committee of the City of Clovis held a regular meeting on July 10, 2025, at 1:30 PM in the North Annex. The meeting was called to order by Mayor Morris, with a quorum present. The committee heard reports from senior services, meal sites, activity centers, volunteer programs, and community partners. - Approval of Minutes: The minutes from the April 24, 2025 meeting were approved unanimously without objection. No action items were noted from the previous meeting.

- Senior Services Report (Ms. Reagan): Ms. Reagan announced that a capital outlay application for the second half of the parking lot and covered patio was submitted to the Aging and Long-Term Services Department for 2024 funding. The department received $37 million in requests but only $10 million was allocated by the legislature, so the project was postponed. The department prioritized centers without electricity or running water. Ms. Reagan also noted that a co-chair for the committee should be appointed at the next meeting.
- Hillcrest Senior Meal Site Report (Ms. Reagan): Statistics for the previous month: 312 seniors served in congregate setting (1,865 meals), 95 homebound seniors (2,718 meals including lunch, evening, and weekend). Numbers have increased over the last three months. Contracts for FY26: NSIP (Nutrition Services Incentive Program) $18,538 (12% increase), Title III (state and federal) $385,856 (6% increase), and a New Mexico Grown grant of $15,000 for locally grown produce and meat. The finance director confirmed the budget is in good shape.
- Hillcrest Senior Life Center Report (Barbara): Activities for July included pottery and painting classes (free, sign-up required), Yahtzee, 4th of July celebration, Spanish bingo, a "Share Your Story" event on July 16 at 1:00 PM, men's coffee social (Mondays at 9:00 AM), gardening with Zandy, Jack and Jill pool tournament, July birthday luau, an Alzheimer's and dementia presentation on July 30, and line dancing. The center will also record stories at the local AM radio station. All activities are free unless at a vendor location.
- Baxter-Curran Activity Center Report (Cecil Yandell): July events: gospel singing ice cream social (July 12, 2-4 PM), bingo and burgers (July 19, 11:00 AM). August: dance with Sand Hill Country Band (August 1, 6-10 PM, $10 fee with potluck dish), silent auction (August 13 and 23). Regular Friday dances with bands or DJs. Calendars are available online and on Facebook.
- La Casa Senior Center: No representative present, so no report was given.
- 50+ Olympics (Melinda Coslett): The program took a hiatus in June and July due to the state tournament. Several participants won gold medals at state. One pickleball team (Steve Watkins and Rocky) was accepted to compete in the national tournament in Des Moines, Iowa. Planning for the next year will resume in August.
- RSVP/FGP Report (Cassidy): Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) has 72 volunteers who logged 1,506 hours in May and June. They lost a volunteer, Agnes Brown. A Keep America Beautiful grant was used for flower planters at the Curry County admin office. A community learning garden is producing squash, peppers, and corn, with produce going to volunteers and the detention center. The Happy Hookers donated lap blankets to Clovis Migrant Head Start and will donate to NMERSH. Foster Grandparent Program: 4 volunteers working at Clovis Community College, 3 new volunteers in training, actively recruiting. Senior Companion Program: 11 volunteers visiting seniors, providing socialization and transportation. The program will assist with the Alzheimer's Walk on September 20 and will take over the Old Timers Breakfast (date: August 16).
- United Way Report (Jane Chavez): Information and referral for nine counties, funding nearly exhausted in Curry County but still available in Portales. The youth homelessness project is moving forward with a new hire. A new alliance with AARP provides resources for seniors and caregivers. Upcoming community outreach includes back-to-school projects, Stuff the Bus, and diaper drive. VOAD (Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster) meetings are being held daily for the Ruidoso disaster response.
- Other Committee Reports: No reports from committee members. Dr. Yancey requested volunteers for Christian Believers, which is renovating the old Pizza Hut at 2010 West 7th Street as its new location.
- AARP Grant for Smoke Detectors: Ms. Reagan announced a $5,000 AARP grant to purchase 300 smoke detectors for seniors. Distribution details are being planned, possibly at the Old Timers Breakfast or through the senior center.
Key Outcomes
- Next Meeting: The next regular meeting will be held on September 11, 2025, at 1:30 PM. The committee will need to appoint a vice chair following the departure of Donna Labat.
- Job Openings: The City of Clovis has three open positions: custodian, office specialist, and program coordinator.

I think he knows he just doesn't remember if we're going to be able to do that. Yeah, just holler at me. All but Friday might try to get it done right now. They're out of luck. We're on strike. But I think we're going to look at doing it on the eighth. And that's up to the next school ramp. Good afternoon, members of the senior services committee and guests. Welcome to this meeting of the City of Clover Senior Services Committee. It's great to see you all. It's great to come in out of the warm summer day into an air-conditioned meeting room, isn't it? Yes. Yeah, it's great. And we'll honor our flags. And so if you if you were agreeable to that and able to have you stand with me and pray, and and I'm especially heavy hearted today, as I'm sure you are for our fellow New Mexicans down in the Rio Doso area, and obviously for our neighbors over in Texas. And so we want to remember them and our thoughts and prayers. Bow with me. Lord, thank you for the blessing that it is to be yours and to be called to live and work and serve in such a wonderful community where we support one another and work together and uh accomplish more than any one of us could on our own. And Lord, thank you for the senior services committee. Thank you for our senior adults in our community and and the treasure that they are. And Lord, thank you for the services and the activities that we have to benefit seniors. May we improve them uh increasingly and and do even better. And and God, we pray for our neighbors and friends down in Riyadoso and ask for your mercy, God. And uh Lord, we pray likewise for our neighbors over in Texas and ask for your mercy. Uh and we pray that you would uh shield us, your children from uh the worst of these natural disasters that that seem to be happening more and more. Uh we'll give you the praise and the glory, and I pray these things in the name of Christ. Amen. Please join me in honoring our country's flag.
