Um I truly believe that a parks and rec program, the parks in a community really define the quality of the community and really add to the quality of life of the community.

Uh I've had a chance to be involved in discussions related to merging of baseball leagues and condition of fields and things like that already, kind of as a fringe person, uh being part of Club's American Little League Board, I'm their treasurer.

Uh but I really want to be more involved in the entire picture of what we do within this community for parks and rec and beautification.

So I am a health care professional.

I've been I've had a health care career for uh about 40 years now.

And um I think my skills, background, and experience uh would be a great addition to the committee.

And I really appreciate your consideration.

Uh I am ill-prepared for for a discussion tonight.

I wasn't expecting to come up and give a pitch.

But uh just off the cuff, I would say that uh I've been here since April of 2022.

I served 25 years uh active duty military.

Uh I've been to several different bases.

I've seen how the uh parks and rec department at different municipalities have been able to uh contribute to the town and kind of curb some of the adolescent issues uh and uh violence and stuff like we're seeing here in Clovis.

Um I also have seen other programs and stuff where we're able to work with United Way and other uh private orgs to uh to use some of their support in uh creating programs.

Uh regardless if I'm uh brought on to the commission or not, I do plan to continue to support the the parks and rec commission in attendance to their meetings, uh offer myself up to any support or anything that they need.

Uh I'm also the planning and zoning administrator for the city, just full transparency.

So I still serve the city uh in another aspect.

Um I've been over to Warry Walker and uh have used their facilities a couple times.

Um the uh the improvements and stuff that we're seeing uh come about at Hillcrest have been phenomenal uh looking at the comprehensive plan and understanding what the future vision is.

Uh I feel like I'm able to support that uh both on the commission or off commission.

I'll hold you near uh my microphone, and uh you can talk to us about the national health and nutrition examination survey and your wishes to uh set that up in Clovis.

Uh I thank you for letting me join today's meeting, and I sincerely apologize for the technical difficulties.

I'm not quite sure what the issue is, but thank you for working with me.

Um I said my name is Alex Ortiz.

Uh I can share some slides after this um with folks, but I'm here with the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Uh we are run by the National Center for Health Statistics, part of the U.S.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Um Clovis is one of several areas around the United States that was randomly selected for participation uh in this upcoming year.

So what that involves is NHANES data essentially serves to take a snapshot of the health of the United States.

So the data that we collect is going to be used to for a whole wide range of purposes.

Updating blood pressure guidelines, cholesterol guidelines, pediatric growth charts.

Um the survey has been happening since the 60s, and it's something that also is used to inform public health policy.

Uh in the 70s, NHANES data was used to remove uh that flags, Americans had rising lead levels, and it was used to remove lead from paint and gasoline.

Um as I said, we are coming to Clovis.

Uh the data that we collecting that we're collecting is two parts.

Uh we do it through interviews, both in the person's home as well as uh telephone interviews, and we invite folks to come to our mobile exam center for actual health exam.

Our exam center is going to be set up in the city or the Clovis Civic Center from around early May until about the end of June.

Uh folks, as I said, uh folks are selected and it involves an in-person interview and the mobile exam center.

Folks are selected through census data and our field interviewers visit them in their house uh as well as their sent notification of their selection through letter.

Um the reason I'm contacting the City of Clovis today is to first share information about NHANES, let you all know that we're going to be in the area, and we're asking um the City of Clovis to provide a letter of support for the work that we're doing.

Um a letter of support would really go toward promoting the legitimacy, letting folks know that we're a trustworthy initiative.

We're not trying to sell them anything.

We're not going to steal their data.

Um and it just provides reassurance that we're collaborating with local organizations and city officials.

And that's um that's that's all I have right now, but I'm happy to take any questions that folks have about NHANES.

Um, but unfortunately, because the locate or I said as I as I was saying earlier, NHANES has been happening for several decades at this point.

Um I'm unfortunately unable to share the exact locations of where we've been because that's considered protected health information and we're bound by federal law to keep any information that we collect secure.

Um so I'm unable to give specific examples of areas that we've worked in.

Um but that being said, if you Google uh NHANES online, you can likely see articles from other areas that we've been working in.

Um just say I agree with Commissioner Garza until we have more information on with this as well.

So the letter the letter of support is really something we do to really just provide reassurance to the community because a lot of them 100% are like you all.

And just to be honest, I had never heard of NHANES until I started working on it.

Um but we don't we don't want folks to think that we're trying to sell them or we're trying to scam them.

Um so it just provides folks reassurance that if we if the letter is coming from a trusted entity from the city of Clovis, um, and we've already received some letters of support from the New Mexico Department of Health.

They're aware that we're going to be working in the area.

Um we've also been working with the um health council that's in the area.

So we've been trying to let folks know that we're going to be coming because inevitably you all get questions from community members.

What are who are these field interviewers that are stopping by who what are these mobile exam centers?

So we want you to be aware and have the information and ensure that you know who we are so you can answer their questions.

So, you know, as I'm seeing it, I mean, it's a you know, the the process of asking for the letter of support as a way for us to become aware of uh well aware of the activity that's gonna be taking place in our community and when we happen to get questions, we know how to answer those about about what this is.

Uh it sounds like it's happening either way.

They have a letter of or they have you know support from New Mexico Department of Health as she just referenced.

Um with that being said, and I think it's good for the community to know what's out there also.
