The first one this evening is presentation of keys to the city to Colonel Johnston and Colonel McMaster, as well as their lovely wives and their families.

We reserve the presentation of the key to the city for those individuals that have made a significant and lasting impact on our community.

And these gentlemen certainly have done that.

And we are we're in that time of year and at that point where we're saying farewell to people that we've come to cherish as friends and we'll be welcoming new friends to and partners to uh to Canon Air Force Base here shortly.

Uh but before we let these gentlemen out of town, as they each have their departure coming up soon, uh we wanted to have them to a public meeting and uh thank you thank them uh on behalf of the city and the the residents of this community for their service and for their partnership while uh while stationed at Cannon and so we've done that, and and I know that you guys uh may not feel uh feel it necessary, but but we think it is, so thank you for accepting the invitation and and coming out this evening.

Excuse me.

This evening we uh have the privilege uh to present the key to the city to these two exceptional leaders, uh Colonel Robert Johnston and Colonel Jeff McMaster.

Uh the key to the city, as I've already mentioned, is the highest honor that we have and that we can bestow, and we reserve it for individuals who have made the significant and lasting impacts like these these gentlemen have.

Uh while this recognition is presented individually, it is equally a reflection of the partnership, the friendship, and the service of Colonel Johnston, his wife Margaret, and Colonel McMaster and his wife Natasha.

They have been generous in sharing with our community throughout their uh time here at Cannon Air Force Base.

Uh these men exhibit exceptional leadership, and uh I have to just imagine because I did not serve, but I would imagine you know, great leadership in uh the Air Force is probably measured uh at least often uh by missions accomplished, mission success, missions accomplished, objectives achieved, um organizations led.

But uh here in Clovis in the community, we also measure leadership success by relationships built, right?

Uh by those heartfelt connections that that we talk about.

Um we measure it by those who show up and who invest, who build the bridge, continually work on the bridge between uh the community and the base, and and make it stronger.

And these these gentlemen and their wives have certainly done that.

Uh they have been steadfast supporters of our community attending events, supporting local initiatives, dressing up really well for the mayor's ball.

We're never we're never deleting those pictures.

Those are great.

Helping strengthen the bond between Canon Air Force Base and the citizens of Clovis.

Your presence, their presence has been felt throughout our community the whole time that they've been here and their partnership has made a lasting difference.

And you know, it's a it's a great privilege.

I see so many community leaders who are champions and and uh supporters of of Canon and the partnership with them here tonight.

We can all attest.

It's it's such a privilege to get to know folks like you.

And if not for the 27th South, if not for Canon uh and the in the mission here, we would miss that privilege.

And so while our hearts ache when we say farewell, we're grateful that that we've had the opportunity to become friends.

It's truly a privilege.

Saying goodbye is never easy, especially when it involves friends who have become such an important part of the Clovis and Canon family.

Um we're sad to see them leave, but we are also incredibly proud of their service and proud of what lies ahead for them.

If I understand it correctly, Colonel Johnston is on to an assignment at AFSOC headquarters, and Colonel McMaster will soon be taking command of the 58th at Kirtland Air Force Base, which is a tremendous responsibility and a reflection of your leadership, Colonel McMaster.

So on behalf of the City Commission and the citizens of Clovis, thank you for your service, your friendship, your investment in our community, and we wish you and your families success in the years ahead.

Colonel, I I know you always uh have your best interests at heart for the community that you serve, and you have proven that here.

Uh you really make the most of uh grant that we got for La Kelinda and uh appreciate that and I think Clovis appreciates that.

So whatever you go, keep on doing the work that uh you know what to do, and uh we appreciate you and come back and see us.

You do have the keys to come to Clovis, so don't forget that.

I feel like uh feel bad about talking uh you know to everyone behind me here.

But uh hey uh Mayor Morris, uh Mayor Pro Tem, the commissioners, uh but really everybody here uh today, uh the entire community, thank you.

Uh from day one, uh you've accepted you know myself and our family uh into your community uh community into your homes, uh treated us like family.

Uh but uh more special than that is is that we see you doing that uh not just uh for us because of you know our positions here at the wing uh but for all of our airmen.

Uh it's uh that's something that's really special.

Uh every time I have an opportunity to talk to other uh leaders in the Air Force and visit other installations I talk and and and kind of rave and and uh and and so proud of the unique relationship we have uh here uh with Clovis uh and the the community with the base and and with Canon, and it uh truly is something special.

You don't see this at it at any other uh DOD installation, and so it really is a special community, and so thank you.

Uh I keep telling everyone that uh this is gonna be the hardest assignment uh that I've had to leave.

Uh we've been uh you know been here just two years, uh but the uh the roots and the relationships we've established and put down uh are uh are gonna be very, very difficult to uh uh to uh to replace anywhere else.

Again, everybody um with without repeating a lot of what Jeff just said.

Uh thank you for welcoming us.

Um I think uh you know it says a lot when you look at the seal behind you, there's a C B 22 on there, and you include Canon Air Force Base.

Uh and I and I think that uh it it speaks to the aspect of the community that is here.

Uh it's not Clovis and it's not Canon.

It is one community um that really makes all the initiatives that we're trying to get after that much easier.

And the partnerships that we forged while we're trying to get those things done are important.

Even more important, like you mentioned, are the connections, the relationships, uh the friendships, and then I would uh venture to say the families uh that we are now included and part of, as well as you are included in part of our families.

And so um from that standpoint, uh I could not be uh thankful enough for that.

This in itself is uh humbling uh and I don't think it's deserving uh to be quite honest.

Um because I feel like you guys do the lion's share, and then we just kind of show up and try to push things along and advocate wherever we can.

Um which isn't that hard to be quite honest, because it's easy to get behind from what you're trying to transform.

Uh and the last part I really want to um highlight, you know, the last two years have been extremely busy uh for the men and women at Cannes Air Force Base and our air commandos and families.

Um you guys are always there for them.

Every step of the way.

Um getting all emotional.

Um you don't know how much that means because when our members come home, they come home to a family that's whole, they come home to a family that's been supported, and they come home to community that loves them.

And at the end of the day, when all those trials and tribulations are hard, the whole reason we put the uniform on is to take care of our communities and take care of our nation.

And when we are welcome and accepted when that mission's done, it it makes it all worthwhile.

Boone is here uh along with uh President Sherry and Kim uh from uh the chamber.

Uh would you all like to come and talk to us about the events that we're headed for this uh Dragon Maine?

Twelve years ago I had an idea about doing an event.

And Gene Porter talked me into doing it.

So 12 years later, here we are.

It turned in from a one-night event to a week long deal.

Seven days if you count the cleanup that we have to do on Sunday morning.

So we appreciate the support that City of Clovis has always given us.

Uh we mess up your streets pretty good sometimes, but we always work it out, and you guys have always been behind us.

Uh Justin and Claire have always supported us.

Uh public works guys have always supported us really well.

And we appreciate what you guys have done for us.

I just want to highlight the Clovis or the Sunday Fun Day is going to be at Clovis Fun Center for the first time this year.

I know it's in the proclamation, but we're super excited for that with the free mini golf and different things.

That that does sound fun.

And something new also as KNEW is going to be doing a live broadcast from uh on Friday night at the Maniac block party.

So that's gonna be uh really fun.

So it's the start of their series that they're doing.

They're kicking it off with Dragon Main.

So that's gonna be interesting to be out there in and watching that as they're being live on TV.

So yeah, that's great.

Uh glad to hear about those uh those new wrinkles in the in the week long event uh that has become truly uh an annual signature event for our community, and I know you pull in people from all over the country.

Where how far away have you seen people come uh to the event?

Well, I think North Carolina, right?

Uh yeah, North Carolina, uh Missouri, Oklahoma, we see a lot of people, and of course, Texas and uh New Mexico, Albuquerque, we're seeing a lot this year.

So that's great.

We look forward to it all.

Ums or anyone want to share their excitement about the upcoming event before we do the proclamation.

I guess I need to say something.

Um it was it was always an honor to get to be a part of the event, and and I know that even now the buzz is strong, and uh um what you guys are doing, you just keep making it better and better.

And uh and I know that Clovis is different today because of the event, and um I know I hear from the car community all the time because I work in the car business every day, and so um they people are grateful.

And even though you I'm sure that oftentimes you guys are the complaint department for that.

Um there's there's far more gratitude than there are complaints, and and so don't stop what you're doing.

All right, I'd like to offer the proclamation.

Whereas Dragon Main was founded in 2014 by local residents and car enthusiasts Gene Porter and Brian Boone as a way to bring back some of the nostalgic fun of Dragon Main as kids.

And whereas Dragon Main has become a beloved tradition in Clovis since the first event launched in 2014, and whereas the cherished tradition of Dragon Main brings together residents, visitors, and car enthusiasts from all walks of life to celebrate the spirit of community and nostalgia in Clovis, New Mexico.

And whereas this year there are several events planned for Dragon Main during the week, including Sunday Fun Day at Clovis Fun Center on the 14th from 2 to 4 on Monday the 15th, the classic restaurant tour.

We'll meet at Cook's Restaurant from 6 to 8 p.m.

On Tuesday the 16th, the classic drive-in tour will meet at Taco Box from 68 6 to 8 p.m.

On Wednesday the 17th, they'll be at Twin Crony from 6 to 8.

On Thursday the 18th, the event will be at Wienersnitzel from 6 to 8.

And on Friday, the 19th, Dragon Maniacs block party will be held on Main Street from 5 p.m.

to 10 p.m.

And then Saturday the 20th, you have the Gearhead Gathering, which will be held at the Citizens Bank Event Center from 9 a.m.

to 3 p.m.

And that's followed by Dragon Main, bumper to bumper, out here having fun uh at 6 p.m.

Whereas Dragon Main Week exemplifies the vibrancy of our city through a series of exceptional events, recreating the timeless joy of cruising Main Street, and the City of Clovis is pleased to also support the event through lodging tax.

Now, therefore, I'm Mike Morris, Mayor of Clovis, and on behalf of the commission declare June 14th through the 20th, 2026 as Dragon Main Week in Clovis.
