Um also noticed what appeared to be a small child, which we have no record of on the lease, and a young man who has a good developmental disability seem to be the only individuals in the unit.

Columbus, Indiana Board of Works Meeting Summary – October 20, 2026

The Board of Works met on October 20, 2026, with Melanie Henderson, John Pickett, Brenda Sullivan, and Eric Cry present; the mayor was absent. The board approved minutes, code enforcement actions, engineering contracts and change orders, right-of-way requests, weed-abatement letters, and claims, and received community event announcements.

Roll Call and Approval of Minutes

  • Roll call: Melanie Henderson, John Pickett, Brenda Sullivan, and Eric Cry were present; the mayor was absent.
  • The board approved the October 13, 2026 meeting minutes by voice vote.

Code Enforcement and Housing Authority Actions

  • 502 Pence Street: Robin, with the Housing Authority, requested ratification of a previously taken condemn, vacate, and legal action at 502 Pence Street. Al, also with the Housing Authority, said a quarterly safety check earlier in the week found deplorable conditions in a unit, a small child not listed on the lease, and a young man with a developmental disability. CPD, code enforcement, adult protective services, and child protective services were involved, and the unit was cleared. The board clarified that the tenants were adults and that only one child was involved. The board ratified the condemn, vacate, and legal action by voice vote.
  • 1516 Sycamore Street: Code Enforcement requested vacate, condemn, demolish, and legal action for 1516 Sycamore Street. The property was described as unoccupied, deteriorated, boarded up, and unsafe. The case originated under a former staff member named Fred; the current owner, Matthew Christmas, obtained a permit in April but no work was done. Seventeen dogs had previously been removed from the home. The board approved the request by voice vote.
