I mean, yeah, we get a guests occasionally, just not too much, but we're always happy to have them.

Um so this committee's been going on for four years, five years.

Yeah, four and a half.

Um it was kind of started back when the mayor um when they were having like the riots in Salt Lake and stuff.

So we wanted somebody, we have switched our name.

Well, we were the started the diversity and inclusion, and then we just the way things were changing.

We are now community engagement.

So all right, so let's just um Melanie's gonna give our inspirational thought later.

So we're gonna skip that and come back.

And um, we just need to approve the previous meeting minutes, just need one person to give an approval and someone to second.

We haven't met for a little while.

Okay, we're just gonna go straight on to what's happening with um in June and July, the cultural recognitions.

You know, and Linda was gonna cover that.

So maybe that's skip that just for a second.

So you can they're welcome to talk about it or I can talk about it for you.

Um go ahead.

Um, so at the uh annual employee barbecue.

Um, they were doing a collection for the food bank, and so I suggested that we maybe take it to the Jesus Feeds pantry who was here, you know, back in in March.

And so I um I gathered up the donations and then drove it over to the food pantry because it happened to be the same day that they were that they collect on Wednesdays is when they get their delivery from the Utah food bank.

So I took it over there and they were incredibly grateful for that donation.

And as I was unloading, they she said, um my goodness, we're out of macaroni, we're out of.

So it was really, really interesting that some of the things that the employees had donated were the exact thing that they needed at that time.

Um and so we'd kind of Kelly and I could kind of talked about maybe seeing if the um that that group would be interested when they do some of these fundraising um events they do throughout the city that we focus on the Jesus Feeds pantry rather than the the food bank.

It's a subsidiary of the food bank, but then it helps like you know, local, you know, draper residents and the surrounding areas rather than just going to the main food bank.

So yeah, it was it was a great idea by Brand because we were loading up the car and it happened to be a Wednesday and she was like, wait a minute, we could just take this to Jesus Feeds.

Yeah.

Um and then the other thing I was thinking about too is um I mean there were you know there were four or five bags of groceries, so it was it was a decent amount, but I think sometimes I think if you're very um specific and you say we're you know we're donating to this specific organization, and even if we could contact them beforehand and say, are there any needs that you have?

I think people are really generous and you know, if they know all they're out of you know, fill in the blank and people are shopping for specific purpose.

They they may see may see more um, you know, donations.

So it's just something to think about because the pantry did reach out to me a few months ago, I think right after they came and said, you know, we need these things, but then you know, as a city, we're like we can't really partner with you, we can't really you know advertise on your behalf, which was really heartbreaking, you know, because after we saw those, you know, we talked about it.

I felt bad.

But you know, if there's a way that we can support them without you know, partnering with them, I think would be good because you know they're they're doing such great work.

And I think a lot of us, you know, we didn't know that there was a a pantry in Draper.

So I think getting the word out and helping.

Could they do a booth at Draper Days?

We have, I mean, we we did allow some for nonprofits.

We're actually um we're kind of at our limit for booths.

He told me no more booths for sponsors or anything, but be able to put them somewhere, yeah.

I mean um or our in an international yeah, we can definitely put them there.

Those are still open.

Oh that's a good idea.

Yeah.

I was when I I didn't take the minutes very um last meeting, so I had to listen to the meeting again for March and hearing all those stories again and really how they were kind of just putting like a plea for help out there.

And so I thought we need to pick that back up.

But it's a few months.

I don't know what we can do, but um, but I did talk to the employee association and they said they were happy to do that every time.

Okay.

Maybe like four quarterly events where we all bring food.

Okay.

I mean, I think that would be amazing, you know, just to serve the community itself.

Yeah.

Yeah.

Well, that's so good.

Okay.

And it that kind of flows into what we want to talk about is volunteer opportunities as a group.

If anybody has ideas on other things we can do as a as a committee.

Um, and today, I mean, yeah, we we met today because we have several groups already trying um trying to set something up for nine 9-11.

I think it's a 9 13, but um, for the day of service.

Yeah.

So um, and somebody asked if the committee would be willing to help with that too.

Perfect.

So we could get something on that day.

Um, I think it's so far it's like several stakes.

I think it's like 300 people that they've they've got about they think that they can get together.

So we're just looking for the best project.

It might be weeding the senior center and library.

But that's great.

Okay, it needs needs to be done.

So um, so that is one option in September.

Um, and then we don't see Linda yet.

So it sounds like they'll they'll decide what they want to do and then we'll just help them.

Yeah, yeah.

I think they're they're coming to the city for um direction.

It's and so the last couple of years, this same group has painted the corral like up at a re at but the arena, the free screen, which has been great because you can just give anybody a paintbrush and it doesn't really matter how good it is, it just falls on the dirt.

But so they had kids and they had it was a huge turnout, but we've done that for two years, and they're like, does it need to be painted again?

And so we're gonna give there's always garbage that needs to be picked up.

Holy cow.

Yeah, we're gonna give that one a break this year and maybe try a big um weeding project and the senior center could use some love.

It's the senior center in the count and the library county facilities, but the city maintains them.

So they kind of get a little bit lost sometimes in the whole process.

So that might be it.

There's gonna be a Frida night from six to eight.

This is not city sponsored.

Um but anybody that wants to come out and support the mayor, usually shows up and gives a few words.

Um it's the first year I'm not really part of the planning committee, but I just wanted to make sure that our committee knows it's that's going on.

It's at the Draper Park.

It's a Draper Park, like the North Pavilion, not the historic like it was last year.

No, I asked Mary and she said Draper Park.

So I'm thinking it's probably the big pavilion.

I can get you guys more information.

I haven't seen the official like invite yet.

Um we've been doing, I think she's been sending um, I don't know.

She gets all the new the new residents addresses from utility billing and has been sending them welcome letter from the committee and a magnet that tells them everything, what's going on in the city, who to call for garbage.

And so I would think it's appreciated.

We haven't heard a lot of feedback from it, but I want one of those magnets.

And then uh, this was one you were talking about.

Um the the next one that um if we want to do the schedule, a time to hand out kindness notes again.

And when is the next kind?

Is it there in a kindness month coming out?

November 13th is is um real kindness day, and then that week is the kindness we like from the Saturday to Saturday.

Yeah, if we want to do the same thing we did or expound on that, would what are your ideas?

I think it would be.

I mean, I was curious to find out if we if the council or anybody's talked about any more about potentially the declaration of of um kindness week, and if you know if we were able to declare for that, and then it would be nice to do like a week packed with um events.

Um which I think like the Jesus feeds, which could be part of that, and yeah, can we do donation drives still?

I mean, we've done them in the past, right?

We did them not for Navajo Nation, we did them for um it seems like everything's gotten a little more sensitive through the world, but um, I think that we still can um I can't I can run it by okay, see if we can just I think definitely like Christmas, you know, we put the box out there, and that's nobody really questions it for Toys for Todd or whatever, you know.

Yeah, the yeah, I know.

The week in November, that week of I think it seems like around the holidays it's a little easier to yeah, and just deliver on Wednesday.

Okay, that's into a Thanksgiving kind of series, right?

Yeah, we see a lot of that around Thanksgiving, right?

And feed the families and stuff, so then it's local too, so that feels good.

Yeah, we could definitely do, I think food drive around Thanksgiving.

And is that be close enough to kindness week?

Probably.

Yeah, do you do you know has have they talked any more about what you know what we talked about when we had Kevin Smith coming?

No, we can I mean do the just the proclamation and I don't think so, is Linda on.

Um we can definitely do a proclamation, yeah.

I think it was just that same kind of thing.

We can't really like partner with right with groups because then we just can't really show favoritism or bias, right?

Yeah, we advertise for one business, we got to do it for everybody kind of same kind of thing.

But um it might be fun to do like an intensive, you know, a week that's really really built around kindness that we you know sharing with the community about it that we do projects and encourage you know, other community members to to do things.

We could end with the food drive for Thanksgiving or something.

Yeah, that'd be nice.

We got the food drive and then like passing out notes like we did before, which I think was it was good.

I think we had a good experience, and everybody else did.

So that'd be great.

There are any like facilities in Draper that we're not aware of, like the the food bank that I mean shelters for women or anything that we don't know.

I mean, we have holding out help.

I think she just emailed and said they're gonna be on the news.

Did you anybody hear them on the news?

Um, I did see it.

So holding out help, you know, right there.

They are um they help women escaping polygamy.

Okay.

Oh, okay.

I think I did see that.

So Holly's Holly's home, and then they have another facility.

Um I know I can get the name because my my sister knows this person, but she lives in Draper and she fixes mills for homeless organization every week.

I mean how many people are making mills every week for has to be her.

I think on Thursdays that she does that.

That would be a great idea to if it's her, um it sure it probably is.

We did recognize her or um, you know, every year we do the um extra mile hero.

And so we recognize her in the fall.

And yeah, that was speaking like for the kindness week, like assisting her or something, or yeah, helping her deliver mills or do something with her.

At her organization, I think it's it's um like be a little too kind or a little too kind or something like that.

I think she like sandwiches and water bottles and stuff, like once a week, right?

So I I probably have her contact still because we had her come in and recognized her.

I just think like instead of trying to reinvent the will, all these people that are doing good, like 24 year round.

Be nice to have our committee step in and assist them, you know, help them.

Yeah, and could we do a social media postings of each of these groups?

I mean, or is that possible?

Like if it's if we're if it's like focusing on the committee and what we're doing, yeah.

I think we can mention them.

Are we doing our Monday food trucks this year?

Tuesday Tuesdays starts July 1st, Tuesday.

Could we do something there?

We oh yeah, that would be good.

It starts um some yeah, uh it's farmers market and food truck nights Tuesday night at Smithfield.

I mean, we work with the vendors if they're called sunrise markets, I think, and they run it, but they're they would be open to doing whatever we want.

Whether it's for any volunteer opportunities or for news feeds.

Yeah, I think a platform that we have that's already running.

So there's a farmer's marker, you said at the same time.

So I mean, if there's gonna be food trucks or whatever, I mean, if we're trying to do food related, you know, it's like anyone can they'll have left over to the thing.

What do we do with it?

Like, I don't I don't know, but I think it's some like baked goods, right?

I think there's some bread and yeah, yeah, that's that may not keep.

Yeah, they would be willing to get rid of.

Yeah, I don't know why that translate what do we do with that food and how that's what we're trying to do, collecting.

Yeah, we could we could ask them if they could say to the vendors, hey, if you don't want to lug home your old, we'll take it or something, you know what I mean?

Absolutely like if there's some kind of things that they don't want to take back that didn't sell, that might be a good idea.

Yeah, it's Tuesday night, right?

So then Wednesdays that they're perfect timing.

Unlike the social media concerns, you know, about posting about that.

I mean, can we do it in a way that so we we're not you know partnering up or whatever, but we're we're doing an activity to help.

But if can we post about it in a way that it helps to educate people about there's volunteer opportunities that they could do too just to kind of shine a spotlight?

Why is that if we list analysis like several of them if we don't just say no, do those feeds if we could say I think we could list different ones.

Um would you like a highlight of the month if you have like a monthly newsletter through the city?

We have any attorneys in our council.

Do we have any what?

Any attorneys?

Yeah, Mike Green on our like oh sorry, engagement council member.

Lucy's an attorney, right?

Why can't we just have a fine print down there?

Right.

People advertising getting getting skinny pills and saying, Yeah, you might die.

Why can't we say, hey, Jesus feeds we don't sponsor it?

Come on.

Oh it's a weird reality we live in.

It's all recording.

Well, and I like the idea of having like a month's spotlight where we could spotlight, you know, different organizations that you know have a theme or something each month, like you know the food pantry or something, and then you know, different resources for that kind of a thing.

Yeah, like if you need help, here's our some things, or you want to volunteer here, some places.

I and I probably missed it on the Soma's the food pantry and the one on the West from that yeah, adventure church.

Yeah, but sure.

Yeah, we're in weather less we can get some food.

Um with all this uh is there any way we could spot like um people that foster children or that um and then we could even offer opportunities like here's if you want to be a foster family, or you want to be a Casa, which is just a mentor that's volunteer.

I don't I mean it's I don't know if you guys remember when we tried to like spotlight like a woman-owned business and then we got some backlash because we didn't because we don't know every woman owned business in the city, right?

So they felt like they were getting unfair marketing advantage.

So um have to be careful, but I Linda's that's good.

I I trust if she thinks she could word it in a way that it's there's like and there's a whole getting all of everybody.

Same thing with foster care.

There's there's a whole bunch of different foster care organizations in Utah.

Is there like a foster care day, probably?

Right.

Yeah, I think there, yeah, there is an everything day, there's donut day.

Like a green day, right?

Or whatever.

Well, that's not Patrick's saying, but yeah.

Um that's not very fair to the blue day, is it?

There's a lot of kids in Utah that are just waiting to be adopted.

There's a whole bunch, you know, so that they've got their profile out there and just want someone to bring them home.

Yeah.

And I don't think everyone knows who thinks about that.

I mean, I had no idea.

I mean, maybe it's bad.

Sometimes if she can, you know, tag it around a holiday.

Yeah, something like it's a little easier to do.

Okay.

Um, I think to go along with what you were saying about people could people would be like complaining that it's unfair marketing.

I think it would also be good to offer a chance for other people to be like, hey, or if you're like, hey, if you want to advertise your business or you want us to like look into your business more, contact us and let us know.

Yeah.

So then we can learn about more businesses, and then people won't feel so like bargained, I guess.

Yeah.

I think um we did like we did kind of backtrack a little bit and then put um say comment on your favorite women-owned business.

So then that did help a little bit, but then we went through like the business um lists of businesses, and we were trying to be like, Well, do you think Sam is a girl or but you know what I mean?

Like it was really hard to include everybody, but we did kind of try to open it up a little more, like comment on your favorite business.

And I think that went over okay.

So I think you're right.

If we can um here's the deal.

If we're doing it right, we're always gonna offend someone.

So it was a joke, people.

But it's true, like I mean we just have to do the best we can as a committee and um reassess if we're not successful, but it's okay to tell people that we have in my opinion that we have a food pantry locally that I didn't know about it, and give people the opportunity to know about these different places that they can go and either donate or work at, or you know, I think the food pantry, I think is the only one in Draper.

So I think that's fair enough.

And they're that ties to you top food bank.

I think we could do that one and not get I mean that should be if she's if she if we run it by her and she's okay with I do think we need to be particularly careful about how we present partnerships with religious organizations.

Umly because there's like a First Amendment concern there, and people might have problems with that.

So if it's a religious organization and we can say this is the only one in Draper, that's why we picked it, that's fine.

Otherwise, I think we would need to present it in like a list of here multiple organizations, some religious, some non, some non-religious, so it doesn't look like the government is like endorsing a particular religious practice.

That's good to give them that legal mind is yeah, that's good.

And we don't know if there's any other food things.

I mean, according to her, they're the only ones, but the only ones in Draper.

I mean, Harriman, I believe, has one.

Um there's some in Utah County, and then I think you know, you go north.

So the reality is that many of these charitable or like organizations are run by religious organizations.

And so we're like, we we can't avoid that, and we don't want to avoid that necessarily, but I'm just trying to trying to imagine someone who sees Jesus feeds and gets mad.

I think they would not be mad if you can say like we picked this in in the caption or whatever, like drapers only food bank, Jesus feeds.

Yeah.

Um if you want an opportunity to serve, here's a great way to serve your community or something like that.

I this is kind of an unrelated idea, but just thinking of ways to volunteer and serve.

I feel like in the winter we do lots of things to help people stay warm and sheltered.

And I thought in the summer, maybe there are things we can do to help people stay cool because it's like gonna be dangerously hot.

So I don't know if we have unsheltered people or unhoused people or just people who are working outside.

Um and like can take around cooled water bottles or like advertise here's a place to get water or shelter or something like that, because it's I think it's gonna get pretty rough.

I agree.

Um I I think that that's a great idea because I've seen a lot of uh people working on the on the street here and uh all around the city, and it's pretty hot.

And um, sometimes I wish that I had a back off uh gate or water bottles just to hand out maybe that's something we can do as a group while we can pick a day and and kind of drive around and do that to just give us better.

Where do you see them working?

Are they well they they're just maybe the the construction workers on the street and whatever?

I mean, all around the public spaces, if we can it's it's not a bad thing to do.

Yeah, construction landscapers.

Um I know, like if you go to the Home Depot parking lot, there are often people who are going off to construction jobs.

Um I guess related.

Is it possible to get some sort of like draper t-shirt or hat or something like that, so that when we're doing this kind of stuff, people know like we're doing this as representatives of the city.

Good point.

Yeah, we we do have some shirts, but they're but they're the old diversity.

Had you explained that, yeah.

Some duct tape over it or something.

Really, yeah.

And I know we have we just ordered um draper ball caps to give away draper day, so I can for sure get you guys all a ball cap.

But maybe we'll think about ordering new shirts too.

Um that would be good.

Oh, yeah, good.

It's even if we're giving out bottles of water too, we could just easily print out sheets of stickers and just put on the you know, whatever message we want to put on about draper city of wishing you, you know, whatever message we want to do, kind of like we did before.

Yeah, coming out.

That's a great idea.

And I'm sure the city can donate a cases of water.

So that won't necessarily won't have to raise that budget too much.

I mean, yeah.

So my um we just I mean, I teach a lot of kids and I teach them since very young, and we just had a black belt normally takes between four to five, six years to get it, depending on when they start.

Anyway, we just had a big black belt graduation, and you know, it's a very physical and mental state that they have to go through for um for two days, and um, and then I forgot about them because it's a huge celebration, and anyway, they go into our collar belt with like all the little kids are there.

Our black bells showed up and they gave it a speech.

Each one of them, which one of those kids that um just got in their black belt two weeks prior, and it was really um the part that I thought uh you know, it's like sometimes you're just doing the same thing over and over and you don't think who are you actually um making a difference for and all of these teenagers now were talking about how hard their journey was and they were thinking their parents, but all of them at some point had to overcome something, they didn't want to do it.

I mean, kids don't want to do things, they whatever it is, not just this, but it's a physical, and then they put up with it because they all say, Oh, I talked to you and you make me do this.

I'm like, and I'm so happy.

I'm like, Oh yeah, I don't remember that part, right?

So sometimes we don't notice like having that little conversation that could have actually changed so much into something, and having these kids giving that talk to, or you know, they were excited about sharing their emotions and or what they have experienced and other kids listening to them and saying, you know, even my daughter that I don't have any hard time making her do anything, I have to kind of stop her, and she listening to this kids and this kids telling her how hard things were and then how things overcome and how make a big difference on her and kids.

So my point of all of this is like sometimes we just need to keep pushing, even though it's hard for our own kids that I don't want to, I don't want to be taking my son to whatever because he's already going to give me hard time, but whatever, but just keep pushing through because at some point they're going to realize that whatever in whatever sport or whatever school work or whatever they're having a hard time with is going to pass and they're going to happy that someone made them do something.

So that's that's pretty much my my talk today.
