Yes, it is applicants requesting to add between nine to ten inches tall metal cap around the perimeter of the parapet roof, uh, which would be visible from street level.

So the guidelines define a parapet as a low protective wall that extends above the roof or sidewalls of the building.

Parapets on the front facade of the building in the historic district are often ornamented with cornices.

Cornices and on parapets are typically made of wood, brick, stone, terra to cotta, or decorative metal, such as pressed sheet metal.

According to Sanborne Fire Insurance map, the current structure was built in two parts.

The period of significance refers to the inclusive time period of development or construction of resources that define the historic district.

With this said, staff acknowledges that the resource, including the 1968 front block, is significantly newer than many of the buildings running the uh Patrick Street.

Apparently uh there's water leaking uh through the bricks and uh as a result of the stagnation on the parapet, and they're looking for a way to slope it in such a way uh that uh water rolls off as opposed to uh rolls down the facade and and into the building.

Uh we're we're not well we we are elevating it to put uh uh to put we're we're it's actually an inch and a half, so we could put on the on the parapet the stone parapet part.

We would we would want to put a uh uh a piece of block, inch and a half tall blocking, and what that does is that that gets us that gets us the height where we can uh create this thing works.

But like the block the blocking is just is just to use uh to secure the metal clips that secure the uh metal coping.

Uh and the re and the reason the reason we're requesting this is that uh time and time again on Verizon buildings on just about every Verizon building that was uh constructed this way, you can see that the joints between the stone right there.

Uh those that that's where you we get the most water infiltration, and then again down where it rolls in to where the flashing is on both sides, and the and the metal capping keep keeps that from happening.

It's just a good way to keep the water out where the where the stone is uh either porous and you have points of failure, whether it be at the caulking or where it rolls rolls back in into where the flashing is.

So give it giving these details like this where it comes down and slopes away, that keeps the water away from the from the sides of the of the parapet and the walls, and then it rolls back down on the roof or the or the face of the building where it's not uh you know those the water runs off quicker and it's not so porous.

Where like these these details and stuff like that, the water just lays lays on these, and then of course when the when the caulking fails and stuff like that, uh we get a lot of penetration in there.

Uh these these items are just um uh maintenance items that you know that don't get that don't get uh taken care of.

And what it leads to is uh like I said, over over the rise of put footprint we've done hundreds of these buildings, and it uh one once the water gets in, the bricks and stuff start to push out, uh and and always a safety concern where they might fall on the sidewalk, uh thing hurt hurt somebody, things like that.

So that's why we're always uh adamant to try to cover these with metal.

Uh you know, just just just based on it's it's a long-term uh maintenance-free fix compared to what the stone is uh where you have to caulk those items every uh 18 months to two years.

So that's the reasoning behind why we want to put the uh metal capping on top.

Rear Porch Rehabilitation (215-217 West Patrick Street) (HPC 22-458)
