I don't know.

0:02

I'd love to bring it back.

0:06

This weekend.

0:12

I don't know.

0:14

I'd love to bring it back.

0:16

Alright?

0:17

Okay.

0:17

This week out.

0:20

Community marketing board.

0:22

Do you want to keep the agenda up?

0:23

I think it's public.

0:34

Good morning, everyone.

0:36

Good morning.

0:36

I'm headed out the door to Breckenridge for the annual governor's tourism conference.

0:42

If you could just take your name.

0:43

Oh, Laura Nolton, the Golden Welcome Center.

0:46

Thanks.

0:48

I did an old-fashioned thing and did a handout.

0:51

So I want I've been giving your budget meeting some thought, the special meeting that you all had and the conversation.

1:01

And then I also kind of dove into your strategic plan draft.

1:06

And I've been trying to figure out you know how we can support you, how we can help you achieve your goals.

1:13

So just to kind of do some broad strokes.

1:18

What I gathered from from the strategic plan, some of the things that Visit Golden is looking at.

1:24

Stronger relationships with local businesses, more resident engagement, better communication, better key connections between visitors and local businesses, more promotion of golden events and activities, visitor stewardship, better visitor information, and more visitor touch points and Spanish language visitor communication.

1:49

What we already have, we have a physical presence in downtown.

1:53

We have a strong network of trained volunteers, daily interaction with the visitors, relationships with local businesses and organizations, connections to community events, and firsthand knowledge of what visitors are looking for.

2:08

So kind of thinking about all of that, um, where can we help visit Golden achieve its goals on the strategic plan?

2:17

So business and event outreach, visitor experience stewardship, visitor information, visitor feedback, and community connection.

2:28

Um ironically, Derek sent me an email yesterday with a bunch of great ideas.

2:32

So him and I are gonna meet on Monday, so I think we're probably all about on the same page.

2:38

Um but the opportunity is more about you guys have a strategy and the marketing expertise, and we have the people, relationships, and community presence.

2:50

So our mission aside, how can we all work together?

2:54

You know, what can we provide that's additional intentional capacity to help visit Golden implement the plan?

3:03

Um so perhaps there's an opportunity for a contracted partnership.

3:07

Um I just wanted to throw that out as community comment and I'm out the door to breakfast.

3:14

I'll see you guys up there.

3:16

So thank you for your consideration, and I'm super excited.

3:19

Donna Owen, one of our volunteers.

3:21

I nominated her for outstanding volunteer, and she's one of three finalists.

3:25

So we'll find out we'll find out Thursday night.

3:29

Thanks for our safe travels.

3:33

That's great.

3:34

That's very nice.

3:36

Anyone else?

3:36

Do we have any other did everyone get a chance to review the minutes from August?

3:44

We have the special meeting as well.

3:45

We do not have minutes for those because there was a snap who with the recording technical default.

3:50

But uh, so how this if any of you guys have sat on boards before, we'll approve them, so we need the motion and the second and conversation to make a motion to amend first or just do we yeah, that's what we do first.

4:05

Uh so I actually wasn't there, but I was noted as an attendant, so I just I would just say I wasn't there.

4:10

And then Lisa and Lisa was there.

4:13

Okay.

4:13

So that was listed.

4:16

Gosh, this is on me, sorry y'all.

4:23

I did watch the recorded meeting though.

4:26

So from watching it and the minutes that you're viewed, it looked like it all matched other than attendance.

4:32

Anyone have any other feedback?

4:36

All right, corrections.

4:38

So it would be a motion to approve with the amended attendance.

4:46

I move to approve the amended amen.

4:50

Second.

Community Marketing Board Meeting – September 22, 2026

The Community Marketing Board convened on September 22, 2026, from 10:00 to 11:30 AM. The board reviewed a proposed partnership with KOSI 101.1 for the holiday season, discussed feedback on the Mashup program, received updates on the banner program and wayfinding maps, and reviewed visitation data for January through August 2026.

Consent Calendar

  • Approval of August 2026 Meeting Minutes: The board approved the minutes with an amendment correcting attendance (Jen Thoemke noted she was not present, though listed). Motion carried unanimously.

Public Comments & Testimony

  • Laura Nolton, Golden Welcome Center: Expressed support for Visit Golden's strategic plan and offered a contracted partnership, noting the Welcome Center has trained volunteers, daily visitor interaction, and community relationships that could help implement the plan. She highlighted opportunities for business outreach, visitor stewardship, and Spanish-language communications.

Discussion Items

  • KOSI Christmas Kick-Off Opportunity: Kathy J (KOSI on-air talent), Nancy Trangmar (Bonneville account representative), and Heather Schneider (Golden Hotel community relations manager) presented a partnership for the 25th annual KOSI Holiday Flip. The event would include a live two-hour broadcast at the Golden Hotel and a two-month holiday marketing campaign. Investment: $7,500 each from the Downtown Development Authority (already approved) and Visit Golden, plus $2,000 from The Golden Hotel. Benefits cited include 753,200+ impressions, regional visibility, and shoulder-season activation. Board members raised no objections and noted the partnership would complement existing holiday events. No formal vote was required; the board indicated support to proceed.
  • Mashup Program Feedback: Board members and business owners discussed the August and September Mashups. Feedback included mixed customer understanding, confusion over the name, late start time (6 PM) on school nights, and low attendance due to rain. Suggestions included rebranding to “Golden Night Out”, moving start time to 5 PM, shifting focus from grants to simply encouraging businesses to stay open late, and creating a passport/stamp system to incentivize visits. The board agreed to continue the program with these tweaks and to survey downtown merchants.
  • Golden in Golden 2027 Planning: Staff reported on parking and shuttle plans for next year’s event. Key changes: using Martin Marietta’s lot (600 spaces) instead of Splash/HHS lots due to snow concerns; deploying 4-6 buses and 7 shuttles from satellite lots; extending shuttle hours past event time. No marketing of the event will be done; messaging will focus on “know before you go” visitor guidance. Vendor and sponsor applications are open through October 1.
  • Banner Program and Maps Update: Staff informed the board that the light-post banner program along Washington Avenue will shift from a nonprofit reservation system to an internal program. New branded banners (seasonal themes) will be designed and managed jointly with the DDA, reducing administrative burden. For wayfinding maps, the city is soliciting bids for redesigned tear-off maps, brochures, and QR-code-linked maps that can be updated dynamically. A joint financial effort with DDA is anticipated.
  • 2026 Visitation Data Review: Derek presented Datafy geolocation and spending data for January 1 to August 29, 2026, segmented by distance (7–60 miles local, 61+ miles overnight). Key findings: total visitor days and trips were nearly flat year-over-year; average length of stay split roughly 50-50 between day trips and overnight; spending declined despite steady visitation, consistent with statewide trends. The top feeder markets remained unchanged (Denver, Colorado Springs, Houston, Chicago). Board members asked about data methodology (anonymized cell-phone pings and credit card data) and requested more granular local spend data. Staff agreed to explore breaking out local vs. non-local spending.

Key Outcomes

  • August minutes approved with amended attendance.
  • KOSI Holiday Flip partnership accepted; funds ($7,500 from Visit Golden) to come from media buying budget; DDA already committed $7,500; hotel committed $2,000.
  • Mashup program will continue with a 5 PM start time, potential rebranding, simplified participation, and a stamp-card incentive; no more grants for this cycle.
  • Banner program moved to internal city/DDA management; nonprofits will no longer reserve poles.
  • Wayfinding map redesign to proceed with external bids; DDA co-funding.
  • Golden in Golden parking plan adopted using Martin Marietta lot; shuttle system extended; no marketing of the event.
  • Visitation data to be supplemented with local spend analysis; staff to meet with Datafy at the Governor’s Tourism Conference.
