the community event that had put on this class.

So, whether you're a neighbor or just the town member, anywhere in the community, very important that you get involved.

Um manager's report.

Speaker 5

2:48

Yeah.

2:50

Um so my top manager's report for May 18th.

2:54

NASDAQ will be holding a design public hearing regarding the proposed replacement of Flatus week bridge this Thursday, May 21st at 6 p.m.

3:03

at the fire station in Great Barrington.

3:06

This is an important opportunity for residents, nearby property owners, businesses, and community members to learn more about the proposed project, ask questions, and provide input directly to Mass DOT as the design process moves forward.

3:21

Given the long-standing impacts of the bridge, closure on neighborhood activity uh connectivity, traffic circulation, and access.

3:29

I do strongly encourage community participation and additional project information is available on the Mass DOT website.

3:38

As of May 18th, the News Atonic Waterworks reimbursement program just visited a total of 131,441.27 cents for FY26, supporting 171 households under this program.

3:56

Therefore, approximately 49,966 in grant funding for nose out of the 250 for distribution to residents.

4:07

Residents with questions about eligibility, required documentation, or anything about the reimbursement process is inferred.

4:15

They are encouraged to visit the town's website or to contact the town manager's office directly for assistance.

4:23

I um I do want to provide another reminder that next uh that this week is national public works week and uh recognizing the dedicated professionals who keep Great Barrington safe, functional, and welcoming every day.

4:38

As part of this year's recognition, the town is hosting a special touch and truck event for Money Puffed Elementary School Pride uh students this Friday, providing them an opportunity to learn more about the vehicles, equipment, and services, and even meet the employees that support their daily lives in the community.

5:00

The week celebration will then conclude with a community top luck celebration at the highway garage, bringing together employees, volunteers, and community members and appreciation of the teams behind the information regarding the community top up sign up can be found on the town's new GD gratitude web page under the help.

Speaker 5

5:17

Now July tab at the top.

5:19

Right at the page.

5:41

And the broader strategic planning priorities for the community will take place.

5:45

The workshop will also include discussions regarding the impacts from the override not passing and adjustments moving forward.

5:53

Lastly, I do want to clarify one point regarding citizen speed comment last week about redacted invoices.

6:01

I think it is important to distinguish between the town's responding to records request and legal review and redaction determinations made by the council on their own invoices.

Great Barrington Select Board Meeting Summary – May 18, 2026

The Great Barrington Select Board convened on Monday, May 18, 2026. An executive session scheduled for 5:00 p.m. was postponed, and the Board proceeded directly with the open meeting, which ran past 6 p.m. The meeting covered the town manager's report, a public hearing, and numerous license approvals. The Board established subcommittees for policy review and a community care team, approved a historical kiosk for the Town Hall lawn, and heard a proposal for deeply affordable housing to address a lengthy waitlist.

Discussion Items

The manager clarified that redactions on recent invoices were performed by Town Council, not the manager's office.
  • Du Bois Freedom Center Interpretive Kiosk: Beth Carlson and Marcus Smith presented a kiosk for the Town Hall lawn honoring Elizabeth Freeman and her legacy. The Board discussed the rigorous historical process involving multiple historians and the ability to update panels as new scholarship emerges. The project was unanimously approved, subject to Historic District Commission review and a maintenance agreement.
  • Bylaws, Policies, and Procedures Subcommittee: The Board accepted the draft charge. Members Bill and Phil were appointed.
  • Community Care Team Pilot Program: The Board accepted the draft charge for a one-year pilot. The Town Manager will recruit up to nine members from the community.
  • Affordable Housing Proposal (State Road): Joey Lindstrom of a local affordable housing organization requested a letter of support for a state grant application. The proposal involves developing 5 to 15 deeply affordable units, which would help address a current waiting list of 600 households. The Board referred the request to the Town Manager as it was not on the published agenda.

Public Comments & Testimony

  • Ben: Criticized Town Council transparency on redacted invoices and cannabis issues, and raised concerns about tick infestations, urging better public health awareness.
  • Jane: Asked about town funding for lifeguards at Mansfield. The Board stated no plans exist and a citizen's petition would be required.
  • Steve: Clarified the veterans' established rotation schedule for Memorial Day parades across Great Barrington and West Stockbridge.

  • Kiosk Approved: Du Bois Freedom Center kiosk for Town Hall lawn approved with conditions (HDS review, maintenance agreement).
