1:40

Um

Speaker 3

1:41

I felt like it was a pretty productive one.

1:46

Um we got to talk a lot.

1:48

I was just discussing with um Anna James earlier.

1:52

She asked how it went.

1:53

I told her that some of the key things that we were looking at were areas where sidewalks could be added or improved, where signage could be used to improve or further designate uh crosswalks, and how those could be possibly moved or improved.

2:10

Um, the discussion around other areas like garbage cans, public bathrooms.

2:16

I thought it was pretty productive in identifying areas of kids own.

Speaker 2

2:21

Yeah, and we had some some planning board uh participation, and so that felt um like a helpful point to get their perspective as well.

Unassigned speaker

2:31

Yeah,

Speaker 2

2:32

um is there anything else that we want to talk about in terms of that?

2:37

I mean, we walked, we started at the common park, we started the commons, and then we went down front street and we walked down to the cemetery.

2:46

Um we identified that that sidewalk in particular should be extended and also raised um and potential speed calming measures there as well.

2:59

Yes.

3:00

Um we identified um the informal um trail that exists on GE property as a place where people go across the road tracks, um, and that being something that that people um use frequently and and trying to figure out how to make that safer.

3:27

We um looked at the cemetery in particular, and just uh we can note now that it's a it's a very frequently used space.

3:39

Yeah, so considering how people use it and and putting that into our recommendations.

3:45

Um Jackie, we're talking about the the sitewalk.

3:51

Sidewalk, the site sidewalk, and therefore also the sidewalk.

3:57

They are equated.

3:58

Um

Unassigned speaker

3:59

uh

Speaker 2

3:59

or the site visit.

4:01

I

Unassigned speaker

4:01

what

Speaker 2

4:02

they're the same thing, I guess.

4:03

Um

Unassigned speaker

4:06

so

Speaker 2

4:06

we took we I'm now talking about to the cemetery.

4:10

I'm just where that's where we are, and then we walked down Oak Street.

4:14

Uh also noted some speed calming measures.

4:17

Um what else we talked about,

Unassigned speaker

4:20

I

Speaker 2

4:20

don't think we talked about a whole lot on Oak Street, did we?

4:22

No.

4:23

No, and then we went to Main Street uh and we walked down towards 41.

4:30

Um the we we took pictures and noted that there should be some significant speed calling efforts and more protections of um pedestrians uh and if we could advocate for that sidewalk uh no the crosswalk to be moved, that would be helpful.

4:48

Um and the flashing light to be in advance of the crosswalk rather than

Great Barrington Site Walk Review Meeting

This meeting on 2026-08-25 began at 6:37 p.m. with a quorum of committee members present. The primary purpose was to discuss the findings of a recent site walk conducted by committee members and planning board participants through the downtown area. The group reviewed sidewalk conditions, crosswalk visibility, signage, speed-calming needs, and other pedestrian infrastructure observations, then considered how these findings could inform recommendations and potential state funding applications.

Consent Calendar

  • Approved opening of the meeting by motion, seconded, and unanimous vote.
  • July minutes approved by unanimous vote.

Discussion Items

  • Sidewalk Walk & Site Visit Review: Committee members present (approximately 5–6 people, including three from the planning board) discussed the site walk that occurred earlier. The route started at the Commons, went down Front Street to the cemetery, then Oak Street and Main Street toward Route 41.
  • Sidewalk & Crosswalk Improvements: Members identified areas where sidewalks could be added or improved and discussed signage to better designate crosswalks. On Front Street, members noted the sidewalk should be extended and raised, with potential speed-calming measures. On Main Street toward Route 41, they recommended significant speed-calming, more pedestrian protections, relocating the crosswalk, and placing the flashing light in advance of the crosswalk (rather than hidden after it). A missing crosswalk sign was noted.
  • Informal Trail on GE Property: Members discussed the informal, frequently used trail crossing the railroad tracks on GE property and ways to make that crossing safer.
  • Cemetery and Oak Street Walk: The group walked to the cemetery, noting it is a frequently used space and incorporating that into recommendations. They also walked down Oak Street and noted some speed-calming needs there.
  • Commonwealth/Open Space Planning: Members discussed the recently completed Open Space and Recreation Plan (OSRP) submitted to the state, which triggers funding for identified needs. The discussion linked site observations to state funding opportunities.
  • Site Visit Details and Process: The site visit was a public forum, so committee members could not discuss specifics in depth during the walk. The visit included planning board participation, and members took pictures and made observations.

Let me know if you need any further clarification or if you would like me to adjust anything. Let me know how to improve. Actually, don't let me know, just do it.
