The Greenbelt City Council convened a work session on September 2, 2026, at 7:30 PM. The primary purpose was to enter a closed executive session to discuss the City Manager's evaluation, the appointment of an appointee or official, and a pending fire department lawsuit. Prior to the closed session, council members received updates on the upcoming Labor Day Festival and ongoing community safety efforts in the Greenbelt Station neighborhood.
Councilmember McKinney moved to enter closed session under Maryland General Provisions Article §3-305(b)(1) and (8) to discuss personnel matters and pending litigation. The motion was seconded by Councilmember Pope. The roll call vote was unanimous (5-0). Council entered closed session at 7:36 PM and did not return to open session.
Yeah, we have a good special meeting of the Greenbelt City Council to order. Madam Clerk, can you call the rule, please? Present. Council Member McKinney? Here. Council Member Cloppy. Here. Council Member Pope. Mayor Protein Weaver. I'm here. Well, uh tonight we're going to be going into uh devoted to uh to go into executive session. And uh before we do that though, I'd just like to ask if there are any information items that need to be shared beforehand. Mr. Someron, do you have anything for us? Any updates uh Labor Day Festival? Um watching an update over there. Today I checked with uh Karen. We are scheduled for inspections on Friday morning. Those are the fire inspections and the health department. There'll be a joint a joint inspection with the county and the city. Um I I we're we're have we have embarked in an effort to do more fire fire inspections ourselves because we have our own fire marshal. Uh Gilberto Cabrera is the state's appointed fire marshal for the city. He ha has me he meets all the qualifications, so uh our team will be participat uh taking on a greater role in those uh activities. There are inspections taking place Thursday and Friday from uh stand for the festival for the structural uh uh machines and and activities that are on site. I've seen the vendor testing equipment already. They were running some equipment today, so you know we've been watching it, making sure that equipment's supposed to work. Um I I w I am mindful not to interject ourselves because this is a Labor Day uh uh committee event, so they are uh the responsible entity, but we're on the sidelines to be helpful, and that's the key word that we are there to be to assist, be helpful, and ensure a safe uh event for everyone. Well, thanks. It's just so exciting this time of year seeing everything come together and uh the Labor Day Festival is uh uh here we are. It's uh the nineth anniversary, so it's really really a special uh occasion. So it's fantastic to do the update. Really looking forward to it, looking forward to some good weather. So ahead. Not in and such a happy note, but thank you for the update. Um I did want to just um because I know that uh some council members were not able to attend uh the police chief and Mr. Salmarone attended um a meeting with the Green Belt Station residents on Monday, um uh to talk about some of the recent vandalism that we've been having in the neighborhood. Um and I wanted to thank um the city manager and uh Chief Bowers and Deputy Chief White for attending that. Um we had really great turnout um for that. I obviously uh our residents are concerned um about this individual who continues to come into our neighborhood.
