This special meeting was a workshop to discuss the proposed Miami-Dade County Waste-to-Energy Facility at the Opa-locka West Airport site, located 0.8 miles from Miramar's city limits. The presentation covered the facility's background, health concerns, political context, and proposed actions for the city.
Hey Ron, look at me doing my part by recycling. Ruby, you just dumped everything in there. Yeah. So what's wrong with that? Isn't everything recyclable now? No. Mixing everything slows a recycling process and costs more to sort out and separate. So I should only recycle the acceptable items. Thanks for helping me recycle right. I'm recycled. And I'm recycled ruby. We're here to help you recycle right, Miramar. Here. Commissioner Barnes. Here. Commissioner Chambers. Here. Commissioner Colburn. Here. Vice Mayor Davis. City Manager Dr. Virgin. Here. City Attorney Powell. Here. Now at this time I'll turn the workshop over to City Manager Dr. Roy Virgin for presentation. Thank you very much, Mr. Mayor. Good evening, Mr. Mayor, Vice Mayor, Commissioner. Staff. This workshop is to discuss, as you stated earlier, the Miami Day waste of energy facility, proposed facility at the Opalaco West Airport site. And we'll have our deputy citemander Calvin Baker to do the presentation. So Mr. Beaker. Thank you, Mr. Manager. Good evening, Mayor, Vice Mayor, Commissioners, City Attorney, and City City City Clerk. I want to thank you for affording us this opportunity to bring you up to date with uh with what's happening concerning the subject matter. On May the 3rd 2022, the Miami Dade County Board of Commissioners approved a resolution directing the county manager to develop an issue solicitation for design a design criteria package for a new waste energy facility. And again, we want to note back in 2022. On February the 12th 2023, the Miami Dade County Resource Recovery Facility suffered a major fire, rendering it inoperable to mass incinerated solid waste. On March 27, 2023, the Miami Dade County Board of Commissioners directed the county manager to analyze and to recommend citing alternative locations for a new waste energy facility. And lastly, the Okeechobee road location, and that's approximately 68 acres. And as you can see them in the in the diagram, you can see them in the in the in the diagram there. You can somewhat see their their distance, how far apart the Okeechobee one is actually closer to the Opal Laka one and the and the uh the last the last location is is much much much further. This this next slide uh clearly did click how close this Obalaka West Airport uh location is to our city limits. Uh uh 0.8 miles. Uh you can you can somewhat uh visualize it from the diagram here that there is a large body of water, and you have the the uh C9 C9 canal that somewhat runs on the side of it that uh that really separates the two the two counties.
