Good afternoon, Chair and members of the environmental committee.

My name is Becky Roth, and I'm here to speak about how environmental health, equity, and housing work together to support healthy communities.

As the city prepares for upcoming land development code updates, I urge this committee to request language focused on inclusive smoke-free affordable housing for any housing project, public or private that receives public subsidies.

Clean air should not stop at the front door.

And for families living in multi-unit housing, secondhand smoke moves through walls, vents, and shared spaces.

Children, seniors, and people with asthma or heart disease don't get to opt out of that exposure.

For them, smoke-free housing is not a preference.

It's access to safe housing.

When public dollars help create or preserve affordable homes, we have a responsibility to ensure that those homes protect basic environmental health.

Smoke-free housing reduces indoor air pollution, lowers fire risk, and supports housing stability.

It is simple.

Preventative standard that aligns with the city's climate, public health, and environmental justice goals.

So I ask this committee to recognize smoke-free affordable housing as an environmental health issue and support a land development code update requiring smoke-free housing for all subsidies subsidized projects.
