I am Supervisor Mirna Melgar, Chair of the Committee, joined by Board of Supervisors President Aaron Peskin and Vice Chair Jean Preston.

Agenda item number one is an ordinance amending the planning code to designate San Francisco Fire Station number 44, located at 1298 Girard as a landmark consistent with the standards set forth in Article 10 of the Planning Code, affirming the planning department's secret determination and making other findings throughout the ordinance.

Good afternoon, supervisors.

Today I'm here on behalf of Supervisor Walton for Fire Station number 44.

Um it was built in 1913 by renowned architect John Reed.

And um today, Station 44 is the oldest firehouse still act in active service in partnership with the Visitation Valley History Project, the committee work on identifying preservation projects to address the neighborhood's underrepresentation in the city's official inventory of historic buildings.

This will be the second designated City of Landmark in Visitation Valley neighborhood.

We would like to thank the Visitation Valley History Project, SF Heritage, SF Fire Department, and our visitation valley residents for your partnerships in pushing this through.

And we can't wait to celebrate with you once this is passed.

I look forward and thank you for your hopefully positive recommendation.

I have a couple slides so we can thank you.

Good afternoon, Chair Marilgar, Vice Chair Preston, and President Peskin.

I'm Pilar Lavalli, Planning Department staff.

The Historic Preservation Commission reviewed the board initiated landmark designation of San Francisco Fire Station number 44 at their regular public hearing on December 20, 2023.

Constructed during a period of growth for the fire department in the 1910s.

This Fire Station 44 is historically significant for its association with the city's expanded system of fire protection in the early 20th century.

At their public hearing, the Historic Preservation Commission heard public comments in support of designation and voted unanimously to approve a resolution modified to include the herringbone brick floor in the equipment bay and the ground floor as a character defining feature of the landmark, recommending landmark designation of fire station 44.
