The South San Francisco City Council held a hybrid regular meeting on Wednesday, April 27, 2022 at 6:00 PM. The meeting included proclamations, a consent calendar with routine approvals, two public hearings, and administrative business items. All votes were conducted by roll call due to councilmembers participating by teleconference.
The council approved the following items unanimously (5-0):
Public Hearing: FY 2022-23 CDBG Annual Action Plan (Item 16)
Public Hearing: Zoning and Building Code Amendments (Item 17)
Administrative Business: 2020 Pavement Rehabilitation Project Acceptance (Item 18)
Administrative Business: Hillside Boulevard Road Diet Improvements (Item 19)
Quality of life and well being of the people of South San Francisco, and whereas these infrastructure, facilities, and services could not be provided without the dedicated efforts of public works professionals, who are engineers, managers, and employees at all levels of government and the private sector, who are responsible for rebuilding, improving and protecting our nation's transportation, water supply, water treatment, and solid waste systems, public build buildings and other structures and facilities essential for our citizens, and whereas it is in the public interest for the citizens, civic leaders and children in South San Francisco to gain knowledge of and to maintain an ongoing interest and understanding of the importance of public works and public works programs in the respective communities. And whereas the year 2022 marks the 62nd annual National Public Works Week, sponsored by the American Public Works Association slash Canadian Public Works Association. Now, therefore, be it resolved that the City Council of the City of South San Francisco does hereby designate the week of May 15 through the 21st, 2022 as National Public Works Week. We urge all citizens to join with representatives of the American Public Works Association and government agencies in activities, events, and ceremonies designed to pay tribute to our public works professionals, engineers, managers, and employees, and to recognize the substantial contributions they make to protecting our national health, safety, and quality of life, signed by the mayor and all members of City Council. And we will get this to our dedicated professionals. Yes, the public works director, Yoon June Kim, I believe, is online. Yes. He's raised his hand. Let's go ahead and promote them. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you very much. I will. Next item, please. Item two, proclamation recognizing recognizing April 2022 as Arab American Heritage Month. Mark Nagales, Mayor. Thank you very much. I've all I've asked Councilmember Mark Adiego to present this proclamation. Mayor Nicolas, I wanted to thank you. I'm going to ask that Sam Shahada meet me at the uh podium and I'll read it to him there. So one of the joys of having served for a long time. Oh, Mark, I don't know if your mic's on. I can't hear you for some reason. It's it is green. Okay. I just mean that right into it, huh? Okay. Well, hopefully the last person that spoke here didn't have COVID. So, you know, I first met the Shahada family uh 40 some odd years ago at the little um uh schoolhouse uh grocery in Delhi, and um and it remains an integral part of the community uh there in that part of South San Francisco. And um I must say the um sandwiches are are great. I think I enjoyed one tonight, but you know what, Sam? Your mothers were better. So this is uh recognition of Arab American Heritage Month, April 2022, whereas April has been designated as a time to celebrate the valuable contribution of Arab Americans in the United States. And whereas the first immigration of individuals of Arabian descent to the United States dates back to the late 1800s and has continued for more than 200 years. Whereas during this time, Arab Americans have been making valuable contributions to virtually every aspect of American society in medicine, law, business, education, technology, government, military service, and culture, and the hospitality industry. Whereas since migrating to America, men and women of Arab descent have shared their rich culture and tradition with neighbors and friends, while also setting fine examples of model citizens and public servants. And whereas Arab Americans brought with them to America their resilient family values, strong work ethic, dedication to education and diversity and faith and creed that have added strength to our great democracy, whereas Arab Americans have also enriched our society by sharing in the entrepreneurial American spirit that makes our nation free and prosperous, whereas the history of Arab Americans remains defaced by misconceptions, bigotry, and sometimes anti-Arab hate. Whereas Arab Americans join all Americans in the desire to see a peaceful and diverse society where every individual is treated equally and feels safe. And whereas during Arab American Heritage Month, it is imperative to increase awareness about key issues and priorities within the Arab American community and combat harmful stereotypes, prejudice, and discrimination. Now, therefore, be it resolved that the City Council of the City does hereby recognize April as Arab American Heritage Month and commemorates the essential contributions, sacrifices, and accomplishments that Arab Americans have made to our society.
