I would like to extend an appreciation to administration, uh, to Director Latif, and all uh colleagues that are involved in making sure that we are finding ways to deter any any violent behavior or any activity so that we can save lives.

My hope as a chair of this committee is that that exalt will not be just another program that the federal government or the state government has given money to a city, and then it just it just goes with no results.

My hope is that exalt coming to into the city of Syracuse will make a difference, that the lives in our lives of the citizen in our city would be safe, and there will be difference that that we are hoping for.

And my hope is that the management and the supervision of this program, you know, coincide with the with the goals and the vision that we have for our residents in our city.

So this is another item that I'm so proud to be a part of.

Uh thanking all my colleagues for uh helping support this item.

Uh this item is an installation of honorary street signs to honor Syracuse 8, a group of brave individuals through Syracuse University that through the effort, athlete across the country and specifically Syracuse University, are recognized and are treated fairly.

And here with us is our former county legislator Carmen Harlow, who was also a star quarterback at Syracuse University, is here to uh say a few words on behalf of Syracuse 8 as their designated representative.

So uh Carmen, would you come up?

Say a few words on behalf of the group.

Hold it together, brother.

I wasn't a star at Syracuse, I was a teammate.

I did go there as a childhood dream.

I appreciate you, but I was a I was up there years ago, but 55 years ago.

1970, you know.

They brothers, like brothers, Syracuse didn't just seem to like what was going on at the time.

Love Ben Schwarzwarder, former coach there, and there was a lot of things that were going on that they identified in the locker room, medical care, lack of tutors, things for them, tutors for other people after games.

Some folks was getting envelopes, some weren't getting envelopes.

Players back then, but I knew these guys because I was childhood alumni.

I'm a childhood fan, living in Pioneer Homes.

One time I lived in Pioneer Homes, Baker Ab, still in the footballs and chin straps and all that during those days.

So I'm a lifelong res uh fan of Syracuse football.

I'm a former student athlete there and all.

And I see some familiar faces here, and these guys stuck their necks out.

You know, they protested that spring, 1970, and I was part of it as a young student at Roosevelt Junior High School at the time.

And the students up there joined them.

Remember all around Walnut Avenue, Marshall Street, that whole campus was supporting them.

I mean, there were some errors, it was the same era as Vietnam War and all that.

But when these guys stuck their neck out, they expanded all that.

And they took now a lot all of them, no, no, a lot of them weren't allowed back on the team after that.

Some were freshmen, some were sophomore.

Back then, you can lead, you can keep your scholarship back then.

So four-year scholarship, whether you quit or whatever.

When I started in 74 was one year renewal, or you know, when you flunked out, you lost your scholarship.

So those guys were able to continue with their education after they protested.

Six or seven were not allowed back on that team.

It was just students.

One or two were allowed back on the team after discussion.

So these brothers stayed on campus, they didn't go home, got their degrees, became very professional people, bankers, principals in the private life after they left.

So they hung out, hung in there for three years on campus.

I got to know them very well.

I honored them.

I respected them, I loved them.

And um, that courage back then, 55 years ago, and we see what's going on now in society.

That was a long time ago.

It was in the 60s when Martin Luther King and things like that was going on, and the Kennedys.

But these guys stuck their neck out like that, and about probably all eight of them would have gone to the NFL if they were still allowed to play.

There were some teammates that didn't want them back on the team.

They called them militants, they called them every name in the book.

You know, a lot of them have air force.

A lot of things went on.

So even that going on, you've seen there was some racism that was going on there, okay.

And it was you had to speak about it.

Because it's the truth.

And then they were honored by Syracuse University after that.

Syracuse University apologized.

You know, Chancellor Cantor.

I was, you know, I was on a Syracuse A Committee, asked to be on that, which was an honor with a fellow teammate of mine, Art Monk, and a few other people.

And Jim Brown would never come back here until these guys invited him.

Jim Brown way back in the 50s.

Okay.

And those guys in those years used to come into the community and party in the 15th war with folks in the neighborhoods.

There wasn't anything on campus.

So when Jim Brown came back, on their behalf, that's well, really, when the significance of it all was brought to light.

And God bless Chancellor Cantor, who had the courage to do that.

The former athletic director, Darryl Gross, give him credit.

They came together, they heard the story.

That's when the wheels got to rolling to honor them up on campus.

So through some discussions recently, you know, with some of them that came back, from my sister's uh funeral.

I'm behalf of them.

I want to thank all you honorable people, because they're they're crying just like I am.

This button you be honored off campus by significant people.

It means a lot.

But when they're honored off campus, and remembered as a community, did support them.

And I was a rebel.

I did some things, you know, back there when that happened.

I admit it.

But just the significance of this being done.

Campus by significant people it means a lot we honor on campus when you're honored off campus and remembered as a community did support the rebel did some things you know about there when that happened I admit it but just uh significance of this being done on Avenue Doctor appreciate you all you honorable people appreciate your honor be high let me faces up here I know McBride President Hudson Council Caldwell with your grandfather we honored years ago at the Urban Sports Hall of Fame for his significance and you and your brother what you've done at 90 hand you'd be honored someday soon with your athletic conferences okay Rita Please change Gathers man you only 16 people man won championship 2006 we're down to 16 players you were one of them Valley Youth football chair 2006 for the Eastern Regional Championship so we go back on the 16 players man almost didn't make it we didn't all of y'all the rest council Hogan talking about Pop Harlowson now you going back now calling this by the first day because I feel I can do that you serve my dad I love your dad watch over not in receipt man some of you might not know that well but God bless you means a lot really means a lot and I'm gonna take a picture of this and send it to Gregory Allen John Logan they were gonna try to be here on the 28th step to December sometime with all that's going on with flights and there was gonna be an honorary thing on 29th for our monk when they want to retire his jersey at the Sirius University campus, so they were all coming into that because the Syracuse A committee was uh Lum know if our stuff very well and there was some demands asked that SU said no, so they said well we can't do that on that month.

So they said we well, we're not gonna come to 28th.

So we'll look maybe a week later in December to actually try to do the 28th, but after that.

So I won't take up too much of their time, but God bless you, love you.
